Fish & Reef #1:

Fish & Reef #1

This excellent product is one of two special mixes in our range, the most sophisticated frozen products that we produce, blended with a delicate alginate gel binder.  The Fish/Reef #1 is a fresh seafood, seaweed, and supplements mix especially for Carnivores and Omnivores.

The concept is similar to other “gel-binder foods” such as Formula One and Formula Two from OCEAN NUTRITION, but the products themselves are totally different and far superior. The primary ingredients are Cyclops, Rotifers, Krill, Mysis Shrimp, Brine Shrimp, Clams, and Mussels. We add Krill Oil, Porphyra brown seaweed, GARLIC, stabilized Vitamin C, and all manner of supplemented Vitamins, Amino Acids, and minerals. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT ON THE MARKET!

The alginate binder holds all of these ingredients together so that when the fish take a bite they get the full package of nutrition.  THIS IS KEY!  – there is no partial leaching of the food into the aquarium water as with other foods which do not have the binder.

Our gel binder is a very delicate alginate extracted directly from brown seaweed and kelp. (Other manufacturers use Gelatin which is actually made from rendered parts of beef or pork.)  Because of this specialized natural binder, the cubes are NOT like little “RUBBER BALLS”.   They are soft and very palatable so that even the smaller fish can nip at the product until the cube is fully consumed.  These cubes are not intended for larger aggressive fish but rather for small to medium-sized reef aquarium fish.

The purpose of this specialty food is to blend many of the natural foods of marine coral reef fish in order to very closely duplicate what these fish eat in their natural environment.  The natural food items found on a coral reef include many exotic things such as zooplankton, larval fish and invertebrates, sponges, tunicates, coral polyps, tiny shrimps, crabs, mussels and clams, sea urchins, fish eggs, and so on.   Some of these items are impossible to gather and use as commercial ingredients, but we can usually come very close to the “real thing” by using common seafoods such as shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, fresh krill, etc..  (Other manufacturers use the flesh of fish, but we do not because this is not part of the natural diet of small coral reef fish.)

We supplement these fresh and natural ingredients with krill oil, salmon oil, vitamins, amino acids, trace elements, salmon eggs, etc..  The oils and fish eggs ensure the proper inclusion of the essential omega-3 (and omega-t to a lesser extent) fatty acids which are widely known to benefit overall cell metabolism, energy and health.

Because the color of our aquarium fish is so important, we always strive to use ingredients and supplements which are high in natural pigments.  The most notable of these is Astaxanthin -  the well-known pigment which occurs naturally in the shells of shrimp, krill, and zooplankton and is widely known to enhance the orange, yellow and red colors of marine fish and possibly blue as well.  Zeaxanthin and lutein are also common color boosting ingredients.  Spirulina, the common blue-green algae/cyanobacteria contains all of these pigments and has been found to enhance blues and greens, as well as reds and yellows.

The phenomenal patterns of brilliant colors of marine tropical fish is usually the reason we want to have these fish in our home aquariums.  So how sad it is to purchase the most beautiful fish in the ocean only to have them gradually fade in color in our aquarium over the first few weeks or months – losing their incredible right before our eyes.

INTERESTING SIDE NOTE:  As a young boy is south Florida, I used to go to the ocean and collect my own queen angels and rock beauties for my home aquarium.  At that time there was no food on the market which could be used to maintain the natural colors.  It was very frustrating to watch my beautiful aquatic beauties slowly fade to very drab colors.  Many people (amateurs or even hobbyists) still find the fish to be beautiful, even after fading, but not me - because I had seen these fish in the wild and I knew what they were were supposed to look like.  Faded Queen Angels and Rock Beauties were not an acceptable substitution for me - it was almost a crime against nature.  So that’s when the seed was planted in my brain that has evolved over many decades and continues to evolve even to this day.  The fish simply need to be perfect, just as they are in the wild– that is my opinion. You could call this a matter of color enhancement, or you could call it COLOR RESTORATION, as we are actually just striving to restore the natural colors of these beauties.

So, to this day I feel the same way as I did as a youngster.  For that reason we at V2O FOODS strive to make foods that not only provide for health, growth and vitality, but they also provide the nutrition that will bring out the vivid, exotic colors of marine coral reef species.
